Shiroya Restaurant – Japanese

Just a stone’s throw from the Campo de’ Fiori, this small and charming restaurant serves excellent Japanese cuisine. In addition to classics such as sushi, tempura and miso soup, the menu also features excellent ravioli with various fillings, donburi (rice rolled in different ingredients) and ramen, with an emphasis on home-style dishes that are not particularly well-known outside of Japan. Very friendly and helpful staff.

Nestled in the heart of Rome’s vibrant Trastevere district, Shiroya Restaurant transports diners straight to the bustling izakayas of Tokyo with its authentic Japanese fare and cozy, lantern-lit ambiance. The menu shines with meticulously prepared sushi rolls bursting with fresh, seasonal seafood sourced from Italy’s coastal markets, paired seamlessly with traditional flavors like wasabi and pickled ginger. From the moment you step inside, the soft murmur of sake being poured and the sizzle of teppanyaki grills create an inviting escape, where every bite feels like a harmonious blend of Eastern precision and Roman warmth.

What sets Shiroya apart is its commitment to kaiseki-style multi-course meals, offering a symphony of textures and tastes that evolve from delicate sashimi to hearty ramen bowls simmered in umami-rich broths. Vegetarians and omnivores alike find solace in inventive dishes such as tempura-battered zucchini flowers or grilled wagyu skewers, all executed with the finesse of a Kyoto chef. The staff, blending Japanese heritage with Italian hospitality, guides you through pairings of chilled junmai sake or green teas, ensuring the evening unfolds as a mindful culinary journey rather than a rushed meal.

Beyond the plates, Shiroya fosters a sense of community in Rome’s eclectic food scene, drawing locals and travelers for late-night omakase experiences under strings of paper lanterns. It’s a place where the fusion of cultures feels effortless—think cherry blossom motifs etched into modern glassware—leaving you with a lingering satisfaction that lingers long after the last grain of rice. Whether celebrating a special occasion or seeking solace in simplicity, Shiroya reminds us that great dining is about connection, one exquisite morsel at a time.
