Senegal River, Senegal

The Senegal River is a 1,086 km long river in West Africa that forms the border between Senegal and Mauritania.

The Senegal River is formed by the confluence of two smaller rivers, the Bafing and Bakoye, which occurs near Bafoulabé, Mali, at about 1,083 km from the Atlantic Ocean. After crossing western Mali, the Senegal River constitutes the boundary between Senegal and Mauritania. The Senegal River basin (SRB) occupies a total area of 289,000 km2. It includes three main regions—the upper basin, valley, and delta—with each region clearly characterized by distinct environmental conditions.
