Senegal Historical Museum, Senegal

The history of Senegal and Gorée Island told in 12 rooms, from prehistoric times to the country’s independence, including the colonial era and the slave trade. The history museum is housed in the former d’Estrées fort built by the French in the mid-19C.

A competition for the construction of the Dakar Museum, in honour of the victims of the slave trade, was organised in the 1990s by Unesco and the Organisation of African Unity. The awarded project consists of a complex structure projected upwards, with a 240-m3 concave volume occupied by the research centre, the administrative offices and the archives; the Museum is located in the lower part.
