Segedunum Roman Fort & Museum

Segedunum Roman Fort, located in Wallsend, Tyne and Wear, marks the eastern terminus of Hadrian’s Wall. Built around AD 122, Segedunum was a vital outpost of the Roman Empire, designed to guard the eastern flank of the Wall and monitor the movement of goods and people along the River Tyne. The fort housed approximately 600 Roman soldiers and included barracks, a commander’s house, a bathhouse, and other essential facilities for daily life.

Today, Segedunum is an engaging archaeological site and museum, offering visitors a glimpse into Roman military life and the history of Hadrian’s Wall. The museum features interactive exhibits, a reconstructed Roman bathhouse, and a viewing tower that provides a panoramic view of the original Wall’s line. Its name, Segedunum, is thought to mean “strong fort,” reflecting its strategic importance in the Roman defense system.
