Schloss Bodelschwingh

The water castle in Renaissance style with English landscape park and extensive outer bailey is one of the last estates in the Ruhr area still in private ownership. Continuously inhabited since 1302 by the family of its founders, the castle stands as a testament to centuries of familial heritage. The economic structures of the outer bailey have served agricultural purposes over the centuries, witnessing shifts in agrarian practices and land use. However, changes in agricultural structure have left their mark, leading to the transformation of unused buildings into residential and commercial spaces over the past 25 years, fostering a communal and diverse living environment within the castle grounds. During events, the outer bailey and park are regularly accessible to the public several times a year, offering glimpses into its rich history and heritage. Additionally, some rooms of the castle, not permanently inhabited by the family, can be visited on occasions such as the “Day of Open Monuments.”
