SCAI The Bathhouse Art Gallery
Tucked away in an old neighbourhood of traditional wooden houses and temples, SCAI The Bathhouse is one of Tokyo’s most prestigious contemporary art galleries and perhaps also the most delightful art space in the city.
Although the 200-year-old former bathhouse has been renovated as a white-walled art space, it retains evocative details such as the wooden lockers where bathers would store their shoes before going for a soak. Today, visitors can immerse themselves in Anish Kapoor’s kaleidoscopic mirrored dishes, Tadanori Yokoo’s surrealist paintings of streets at night, and Tatsuo Miyajima’s zen-like installations of digital LED counters.
