Sao Bento Monastery, Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil

Founded in 1590 by monks from Bahia, the Benedictine Monastery of Rio de Janeiro was built at the request of the inhabitants of the newly founded city of São Sebastião. In the center of the great metropolis, a place of silence, peace, prayer and work is conserved here, which translates into several activities that are regularly maintained.

The two main ones are the daily celebrations of the Divine Office and the Mass, with Gregorian chant. In addition, they work within the Abbey: the College of St. Benedict, the Editions Lumen Christi, the Faculty of St. Benedict, the House of retreats of Emmaus and the Social Work of St. Benedict. The Monastery also maintains two retreat houses and meetings: the House of St. Benedict, in Alto da Boa Vista, and the Seio de Abrahão Site in Teresópolis.
