Getting to the border Standard Marine links Sandakan with Zamboanga on the Phillipine island of Mindanao. Ferries depart Sandakan harbour at 10pm every Monday arriving at 8pm the next day (22 hours). There are now no ferries to Jolo because of insurgency problems.
At the border Because of lawlessness, including kidnappings of foreign nationals, and Islamist insurgency, Western embassies warn against travel to or through Zamboanga, so check local conditions before you sail. Travellers we spoke to said you don’t need an onward ticket to enter the Phillipines, however the Filipino government says otherwise, so it may be wise to have one.
