Basilica di San Giovanni Evangelista

A historic church with beautiful Gothic influences and mosaics, reflecting Ravenna’s spiritual heritage. San Giovanni Evangelista is a historic church located in Ravenna, Italy. Established in the 5th century AD by Princess Galla Placidia, it was constructed in gratitude to St. John the Evangelist for sparing her from a perilous sea voyage.  The church has undergone various transformations, including Gothic renovations in the 14th century and significant restoration after World War II bombings.

Notable for its historical mosaics, the basilica’s nave floor features designs dating back to the 13th century, depicting scenes from the Fourth Crusade. These mosaics offer a unique blend of historical record and artistic expression.  The Basilica of San Giovanni Evangelista is situated near Ravenna’s railway station, just a short distance from the city center. It is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 am to 4:30 pm, with free admission.
