Alt-Sachsenhausen

Whoever speaks of this district, whether a local or a tourist, is most likely referring to Alt-Sachsenhausen with its narrow streets and taverns. In its beer gardens, you’ll surely find the “Ebbelwoi” (apple wine) and Frankfurt’s national dish, the “Grie Soß” (Green Sauce). Particularly, nightlife enthusiasts are drawn to the entertainment district with its many pubs, bars, and discos. Far beyond Germany’s borders, Sachsenhausen’s Museum Embankment has gained fame. Numerous museums are lined up like pearls on a string, including the Städel Museum, the German Film Museum, the Liebieghaus, the Museum of Applied Arts, and the Museum of World Cultures. In their garden settings, idyllic or chic cafes and restaurants invite you to pause. On the last weekend in August, hundreds of thousands of visitors celebrate the Museumsuferfest with a diverse cultural program and a grand finale fireworks display over the Main River.

The kilometer-long green Main River bank with its breathtaking view of the high-rise skyline is an attraction in itself. Especially in fine weather, it’s bustling with activity. New neighborhoods with modern architecture, such as the Deutschherrnviertel, have emerged here, some directly on the Main River.

The neighborhood library has moved into the former tram depot at the Südbahnhof. And where the former silo tower of the renowned Henninger Brewery once stood, a modern residential high-rise now towers over the district. In contrast, Schweizer Straße remains a constant fixture as a shopping mile.
