Twenty would-be naval officers will trek along Hadrian’s Wall in memory of Falkland heroes.

More used to outdoor activities on nearby Dartmoor, the Officer Cadets from Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth intend to walk from the West Coast to East along the remains of the UK’s most famous Roman relic. The cadets – all due to complete their training and pass out of the famous naval institution a couple of weeks after the trek – have all volunteered, with the goal of raising £5,000 for Royal Marines and their families. The march is being staged in memory of 45 Commando whose green berets famously yomped across the East Falkland in May and June 1982. The cadets won’t face the temperatures and weather endured by the Royal Marines who faced a bleak march over boggy terrain in rain, sleet and snow – not to mention fighting with the Argentine invaders – to ultimately reach the Falklands capital of Stanley and bring about the enemy’s surrender.

Britannia Royal Naval College

Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC), located in Dartmouth, Devon, is the esteemed training academy of the Royal Navy, dedicated to shaping the future leaders of maritime defense. Perched on a hill overlooking the River Dart, this iconic institution has been at the heart of naval officer training since its inception in 1863. Originally housed aboard HMS Britannia, the training center transitioned to its grand Edwardian building in 1905, a magnificent structure designed by Sir Aston Webb. The college boasts a striking architectural design with influences from the Palladian and Edwardian styles, complete with a chapel, a grand hall, and a parade ground that resonates with the echoes of history.

Training at BRNC focuses not only on the rigorous physical and academic demands of naval life but also on instilling the values of courage, resilience, and leadership. With a tradition of excellence, the college has played a pivotal role in the careers of many distinguished naval officers, including royalty and international leaders. Visitors are drawn to the college for its historical significance and its public tours, which offer a glimpse into the lives of officer cadets and the storied history of the Royal Navy. BRNC stands as a symbol of dedication and heritage, continuing to prepare the next generation for service with honor and distinction.
