Royal Australian Navy Heritage Collection

The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) Heritage Collection serves as a repository and exhibition of artefacts, documents, and memorabilia that reflect the rich history of Australia’s naval forces. The collection includes a wide range of items such as uniforms, medals, photographs, ships’ equipment, and paintings, many of which commemorate significant events in naval history, as well as the individuals who have served in the RAN.

The Main Repository the collection is housed at Spectacle Island in Sydney Harbour, which is one of the oldest naval storage facilities in Australia, dating back to the 19th century. The island holds much of the Navy’s cultural and historical assets, including archives and rare items not typically on public display. Spectacle Island itself is a heritage-listed site, adding further significance to the preservation of naval history. The collection can also be accessed by the public through various exhibits and displays at the Australian National Maritime Museum and other associated museums and naval bases across Australia.

The collection provides valuable insights into the RAN’s role in both peace and war, from its founding in 1911 to modern times, and serves as a key resource for researchers and naval historians.
