Rhine Embankment Promenade

The Düsseldorf Kö is world renowned, but it is far from being the only promenade in the city. The Rhine embankment promenade is also very popular and was designed between 1990 and 1997 according to the plans of the architect Niklaus Fritschi.

No wonder, the promenade between the Altstadt (Old town) and the river has so much to offer: warm breezes and spectacular sunsets, gourmet celebrations, a staircase on which to linger and urban beach furniture. The prerequisite for the one and a half kilometres of quality of life was the construction of the Rhine embankment tunnel. Original Düsseldorf people, being those who remember how the situation was in earlier times, are still enthusiastic about the fact that the traffic, which used to run parallel to the river here before 1990, now flows underground.
