Quirimbas National Park, Mozambique

The Quirimbas National Park is the largest marine protected area in Africa and home to pristine coral reefs, five species of turtles, calving humpback whales and grazing dugongs. Within the Park are eleven islands of the Quirimbas Archipelago which stretches all the way up to Tanzania. These tropical, coral islands have enormous cultural and historical value, with a combination of Arabian, Portuguese, and African influences.

The Park also spreads inland, including coastal forrest habitats that have all but disappeared along the East African coastline. Here, there are healthy populations of elephants, lions, leopards, crocodiles and there are even wild dog. The Park is any ecologist’s dream! This remote region was cut off for decades during the civil war and sits in the grey area between the Southern and East African field guides.New species are just waiting to be discovered.
