The Puente de la Salve, officially named the Prince and Princess of Spain Bridge, is a striking green concrete cable-stayed bridge that spans the Bilbao estuary. Completed in 1972, it was the first of its kind in Spain and one of the few with a steel deck. Designed by engineer Juan Batanero García-Geraldo, it was built to alleviate traffic congestion and now serves as a prominent entrance to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.
The bridge is renowned for its distinctive red arch, designed by French artist Daniel Buren for the museum’s tenth anniversary in 2007. This addition has transformed the bridge into a symbol of Bilbao, seamlessly integrating modern art with urban infrastructure. It offers pedestrians and cyclists access via stairs and elevators, providing panoramic views of the city and the museum.
