Ptarmigan Cirque

**Embark on a breathtaking alpine journey through Ptarmigan Cirque’s rugged beauty.**

Ptarmigan Cirque is a popular short hike located in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, Alberta. The trailhead is situated near Highwood Pass, the highest paved pass in Canada, along Highway 40. The hike is approximately 4.5 kilometers round-trip, with an elevation gain of about 210 meters, making it accessible for most hikers. The trail offers stunning views of alpine meadows, jagged peaks, and vibrant wildflowers during the summer months.

The best time to hike Ptarmigan Cirque is from June through November, as the trail is closed from December 1 to June 14 each year due to avalanche risk and to protect wildlife. During the fall, the area is renowned for its golden larch trees, attracting photographers and nature enthusiasts. The trail is dog-friendly but requires pets to be kept on a leash.

A Kananaskis Conservation Pass is required to park at the Highwood Meadows Day Use Area. The trailhead is accessible year-round, but conditions can vary with the seasons, so it’s advisable to check trail reports before heading out. The area is equipped with basic amenities, including washrooms. Whether you’re seeking a leisurely hike or a scenic spot for photography, Ptarmigan Cirque offers a memorable outdoor experience.
