Projeto Tamar – Oceanário de Aracaju, Atalaia, Aracaju, State of Alagoas, Brazil
The Aracaju Oceanarium was inaugurated in June 2002 and has the capacity to receive up to 300 people at the same time, reaching the mark of approximately 160 thousand visitors / year.
It is the first oceanarium in the Northeast and the fifth in Brazil. The others are in São Paulo (Santos, Ubatuba, Aparecida do Norte and Guarujá). Aracaju / SE was created, built and maintained and administered by the Pró-TAMAR Foundation, through the regional coordination of the TAMAR Project in Sergipe. Installed on the beach of Atalaia, 500m from the sea, it occupies 141 thousand m2 of area ceded by the Federal Government, through a contract of assignment between the Patrimony Service of the Union and the Foundation Pro-TAMAR. It has a built area of 1,700 m², in the form of a giant tortoise, with the cover in eucalyptus and piaçava. It is one of the tourist attractions of Aracaju, standing out in the modern and revitalized Orla de Atalaia, between water mirrors with bridges, boardwalk, bike path and space for exhibitions, cultural presentations and water sports.
Through regular activities such as guided visits, lectures and exhibitions, it encourages the sensitization of residents and visitors to the conservation of the marine ecosystem and the richness of the São Francisco River. Lectures, video shows and aquarium classes allow visitors to learn about the Sergipe coastal ecosystem and learn about different species of marine animals.
