Múte Bourup Egede has served as the Prime Minister of Greenland since April 2021, becoming the youngest person to hold the office. Born on 11 March 1987 in Nuuk, he grew up in Narsaq in southern Greenland. His journey reflects the story of a determined and visionary leader, deeply connected to the culture and aspirations of his people.
Egede began his academic pursuits at the University of Greenland in 2007, studying cultural and social history. However, he paused his studies in 2013 to manage his family’s business, a step that demonstrates his commitment to both personal growth and familial responsibilities. His leadership abilities quickly became evident as he transitioned into politics, engaging in the Greenlandic youth parliament in 2007. From 2013 to 2015, he served as chair of the youth wing of the Inuit Ataqatigiit (IA) party.
In 2015, Egede was elected to the Inatsisartut, Greenland’s parliament, marking the start of his impactful political career. By 2018, he had become the chairman of the Inuit Ataqatigiit party, leading it to a historic victory in the 2021 general election, where it secured 36.6% of the vote. His leadership and vision resonated with Greenlanders, particularly his focus on independence, environmental sustainability, and economic development.
Egede’s tenure as Prime Minister is defined by his firm stance on Greenlandic independence from Denmark. In his New Year’s address in January 2025, he passionately called for Greenland to take bold steps towards self-determination, reflecting his ambition for a future where Greenland can stand as an independent nation. Beyond politics, Egede’s leadership embodies a strong connection to Greenland’s unique cultural heritage and a commitment to balancing environmental conservation with the needs of the economy.
