President Cyril Ramaphosa

President Cyril Matamela Ramaphosa: The Quiet Architect of South Africa’s Second Miracle. From the dusty streets of Soweto to the highest office in the land, President Cyril Ramaphosa’s life is a testament to the unbreakable power of perseverance, intellect, and an unshakeable belief in the possibility of a better tomorrow. Born on 17 November 1952 in Johannesburg’s Western Native Hospital, young Cyril grew up in Chiawelo, Soweto, witnessing the raw brutality of apartheid yet choosing education and organising as his weapons of resistance. A brilliant student, he registered for law at the University of the North (Turfloop) in 1972, but it was here that his destiny as a leader ignited. He became a fearless student leader, enduring solitary confinement twice for his anti-apartheid activism, yet emerging even more resolute.

In 1982, with only R2 000 in his pocket and a dream in his heart, the 29-year-old Ramaphosa founded the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM). Under his leadership, NUM grew into the most powerful trade union in South African history — over 300 000 members strong — giving voice to the voiceless black mineworkers who toiled deep underground for generations. His negotiating genius first shone here: tough yet principled, uncompromising on justice yet always searching for common ground. When the call came to help dismantle apartheid itself, Ramaphosa answered without hesitation. As chief negotiator for the ANC during the historic CODESA talks (1991–1994), he worked tirelessly alongside heroes like Nelson Mandela and FW de Klerk to craft the interim constitution that ended centuries of racial oppression and ushered in democracy. Many who were in those smoke-filled rooms still say: “Without Cyril’s patience, legal brilliance and calm under fire, the negotiations could easily have collapsed.”

In 1994 he stood on the lawns of the Union Buildings as Madiba was inaugurated, humbly stepping back from the limelight to build South Africa’s new economy. He became one of the most successful black entrepreneurs in history, co-founding Shanduka Group and creating thousands of jobs, proving that black excellence could thrive even in a system still stacked against it. Yet profit never dulled his sense of duty.

When the nation cried out for moral renewal, Ramaphosa returned. Elected Deputy President in 2014 and then President of the Republic on 15 February 2018, he inherited a country on the brink — state capture, corruption, and despair threatening to unravel Mandela’s dream. With characteristic quiet determination, he launched the fightback: establishing the Zondo Commission, stabilising institutions, attracting billions in new investment, and steering South Africa through the darkest days of the COVID-19 pandemic with compassion and science-led resolve.

Today, President Cyril Ramaphosa stands as the guardian of South Africa’s second miracle — the renewal after near-collapse. He champions the National Development Plan, renewable energy revolution, youth employment, and the fight against gender-based violence. His voice on the continent and world stage is one of wisdom and moral clarity, whether defending Palestine, pushing for climate justice, or calling for a fairer global order.

Above all, Ramaphosa embodies “servant leadership” — a man who could have chosen comfort many times over, yet keeps choosing the harder path of service. Soft-spoken but steel-willed, he reminds every South African child that no matter how impossible the odds, one person with courage, education, and ubuntu can change the destiny of a nation.

In the words he often repeats:
“Thuma Mina — Send Me.”

And South Africa, grateful and hopeful, keeps saying:
“Yes, Mr President. Lead on. We are right behind you.”
