Praca da Republica, Belem, State of Para, Brazil

The Republic Square is located in the city of Belem , in Brazil .At the beginning it was Largo da Campina, an immense open land that lay between the district of Campina and the road that led to the hermitage of Nossa Senhora de Nazaré .

Then, in the eighteenth century , there was built a huge warehouse to store gunpowder , giving the name to Largo da Pvvora. A gallows has been erected, but there is no record of any hanging. What is known is that space was used to bury, in shallow grave, slaves and poor.

In honor of the emperor, they gave the name of Pedro II to him, but it continued being a great open land. In 1850, they even planted some trees, but in a disorderly way. With the inauguration of Theatro da Paz in 1878, there was an urbanization, also modest. Its definitive name came with the change of regime: ” Republic Square “.
