Pedro Sánchez, born on February 29, 1972, in Madrid, Spain, is an influential Spanish politician and economist, currently serving as the Prime Minister of Spain. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Business Studies from Complutense University of Madrid and a Master’s degree in European Economic Policy from the Free University of Brussels. Sánchez joined the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) in 1993 and rose through the political ranks, initially serving as a Madrid city councilor before becoming a member of the Spanish Parliament. In 2014, he was elected Secretary-General of PSOE, a position he briefly left in 2016 due to internal conflicts, only to be re-elected in 2017. His political acumen was demonstrated when he successfully led a no-confidence motion against Mariano Rajoy in 2018, becoming Prime Minister.
During his tenure, Sánchez has focused on progressive reforms and social justice, championing gender equality, LGBTQ+ rights, and labor reforms. He has faced significant challenges, including managing the COVID-19 pandemic and navigating Spain’s complex political landscape, particularly regarding regional independence movements. After the 2019 general elections, he formed a coalition government with Unidas Podemos, continuing to advocate for economic recovery and green energy transitions. Sánchez is married to María Begoña Gómez Fernández, with whom he has two daughters, and is known for his interest in sports, particularly basketball.
