Plazza Moyúa

Plaza Moyúa and its surrounding streets, such as Elcano and Alameda Recalde, form a prestigious area featuring grand hotels like the Carlton, stylish stores, and upscale residences. It is considered the heart of Bilbao’s elegance.

Plaza Moyúa, also known as Plaza Elíptica, is a central landmark in Bilbao, Spain, renowned for its elegant design and historical significance. Situated along the Gran Vía de Don Diego López de Haro, the city’s main avenue, the square serves as a pivotal junction where eight major streets converge, reflecting its original conception in 1876 as a central hub for the city’s expansion.

The square was constructed in the 1940s based on the design by architect José Luis Salinas. In 1997, his son, Manuel Salinas, undertook a renovation that preserved the plaza’s distinctive elliptical shape and its French and English-style flower beds, while incorporating modern elements like steel lampposts and functional street furniture. At the heart of Plaza Moyúa lies a central fountain, surrounded by meticulously maintained gardens and walkways. The square is encircled by notable buildings, including the historic Hotel Carlton, the Palacio Chávarri, and the La Aurora building, each contributing to the area’s architectural charm.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, Plaza Moyúa functions as a vital transportation hub. The Moyua metro station, serving lines 1 and 2, provides convenient access to various parts of the city, including the nearby Guggenheim Museum. Additionally, the square is a terminus for several Bilbobus routes, enhancing its connectivity. Plaza Moyúa continues to be a vibrant gathering place for both locals and visitors, embodying the dynamic spirit of Bilbao through its blend of historical significance and modern urban design.
