Pietra di Bismantova

The Pietra di Bismantova is one of the most extraordinary and awe-inspiring natural landmarks in all of Italy — a vast, isolated calcarenite massif rising from the Reggiano Apennines with the unmistakable profile of a great ship frozen in stone, its plateau summit reaching 1,047 metres above sea level. This is a place of mythic dimension: Dante Alighieri himself immortalised it in the Purgatorio, writing that one might climb Bismantova with one’s feet, but here a man should fly — testimony to the rock’s almost supernatural presence in the Italian imagination.

The Pietra is a kilometre long and 240 metres wide, with sheer walls rising 300 metres above the plateau that forms its base, creating a gigantic example of residual erosion that stands as one of the most complete and varied rock climbing destinations in the whole of Emilia-Romagna. Over the decades, alpinists have opened numerous routes and variants of every length and difficulty, while the classic hiking trail — the circular CAI 697 path of approximately five kilometres with 340 metres of ascent — offers a profoundly rewarding excursion for walkers of intermediate fitness.

The summit plateau, gently descending toward the north, is an unforgettable viewpoint across the Parma, Reggio and Modena Apennine chain and, on the clearest of days, all the way to the Alps beyond the Po Valley. The ancient Benedictine hermitage on the rock adds a layer of spiritual history to the experience, inviting quiet contemplation amid the grandeur of the landscape.

The nearby Rifugio della Pietra provides accommodation, refreshments and a warm welcome for climbers and walkers. The Pietra is accessible by car via Castelnovo ne’ Monti and the SP26, with parking at Piazzale Dante below the rock.
