Penguin Island

Site known for its hearty population of little penguins, the smallest penguin species, & pelicans. Blessed with white sandy beaches and surrounded by crystal clear waters, Penguin Island is just 30 minutes south of Perth and lies a five minute ferry ride away in the heart of the ruggedly spectacular Shoalwater Islands Marine Park. The wildlife is the star attraction. Join us for a cruise to see wild dolphins and rare Australian sea lions before getting up close with the world’s smallest penguins! Island rangers present penguin feedings at 10.30am, 12.30pm & 2.30pm daily.

Getting here is easy with ferries departing hourly from 9am to 3pm. Spend as long, or as little as you like to swim, snorkel, picnic and explore the nature trails and beaches before catching a return ferry at your leisure.

It is our privilege to share this beautiful part of the coast & its wildlife and we hope you enjoy your visit.

Penguin Island is a 12.5-hectare island off the coast near Perth, approximately 660 metres from Shoalwater. It is home to a colony of approximately 250 little penguins, the largest population of the birds in Western Australia. Since 2007, the island had experienced an 80 percent decline in penguin numbers from a peak of 1,700 that year. The waters surrounding the island make up the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park.
