Peace Park is a tranquil urban green space located at the west end of the Eau Claire Promenade in downtown Calgary, at the intersection of 2 Avenue and 8 Street SW. Spanning approximately 3 hectares, the park is dedicated to honoring Canada’s peacekeepers and serves as a place for reflection and remembrance.
A central feature of Peace Park is the sandstone Memorial Arch, which commemorates Canadian soldiers who lost their lives in the First World War, Second World War, and the Korean War. Originally part of the Strathcona Building constructed during World War I, the arch was salvaged after the building’s demolition and reconstructed in Peace Park in 1992. The park also includes pathways, benches, and a viewing platform, providing visitors with a serene environment to relax and contemplate. Peace Park is open daily from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Adjacent to Peace Park is Peacekeeper Park, located in the Garrison Green neighborhood on the former grounds of Canadian Forces Base Calgary. Established in 2004, Peacekeeper Park encompasses 1.85 hectares and features the Wall of Honour and the Mission Wall, commemorating Canadian Forces members who have died on peacekeeping and peace support missions since the end of the Second World War. A notable sculpture in the park depicts Master Corporal Mark R. Isfeld presenting a small knitted “Izzy” doll to a child, symbolizing the compassion of Canadian peacekeepers.
