Parque Nacional de la Lengua de Barbaria, Saint-Louis, Senegal

The Langue de Barbarie National Park is located at the mouth of the Senegal River, 25 km from Saint Louis, belonging to the biogeographical province of Western Sahel.

It was established in 1976. It has an area of 20 km² and is at sea level. The Park includes the three islands of the Langue de Barbarie, the Island Gandiole Island and two small islets. It has very infertile sandy soils. The annual rainfall is 300 mm on average and the average annual temperature is 27 ° C.

In 2003, after the floods in the low areas of Saint-Louis, to facilitate the exit to the sea of the Senegal river, a channel of 4 meters was opened in the Language of Barbarism that in a few years has been enlarged in hundreds of meters by the effect of the sea and, in 2010 it was found that between 2003 and 2009 the language had lost 70% of its surface and the process of disappearance continues. At the moment this loss of surface has not affected the extension of the Park.
