Parque Estadual da Chacrinha

The Parque Estadual da Chacrinha, nestled in the heart of Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, is a 13.3-hectare oasis of Atlantic Forest, offering a serene escape from the urban bustle. Established in 1969, it preserves vital ecosystems and serves as a haven for species like mico monkeys, armadillos, and various birds, including the gavião-carijó and sanhaço. Its trails, leading to the top of Morro de São João, provide opportunities for hiking, picnicking, and connecting with nature amidst the city.

This park, managed by the Rio de Janeiro Prefecture since 2007, holds historical significance with remnants of 18th-century military structures, including stone platforms and a rustic aqueduct, reflecting its past as a defensive fortress. The name “Chacrinha,” meaning “small farm,” originates from a former chácara in the area, adding cultural depth to its identity. Visitors, especially families and seniors, enjoy its playgrounds, benches, and spaces for relaxation, making it a cherished local retreat.

Accessible via a short walk from Cardeal Arcoverde metro station, the park is ideal for outdoor activities like Tai Chi, football, and eco-tourism, with a segment of the Trilha Transcarioca passing through. Its lush flora, including embaúba and paineira trees, supports climate moderation and biodiversity in one of Rio’s densest neighborhoods. While generally safe, especially on weekends, visitors are advised to stick to marked trails and avoid weekdays for added security.
