Park Station

This is the main Gautrain underground station in the city center, connecting commuters to Metrorail, bus services, and intercity travel. Park Station in Johannesburg is the city’s central rail and bus hub and is actually the largest railway station in Africa. Its origins go back to 1897, when it was first established as “Park Halt.”Over time, as Johannesburg grew rapidly during the gold rush era, the station underwent major redevelopment: in 1932 a new concourse was opened, designed by architect Gordon Leith, featuring eight platforms and four approach tracks to handle heavy passenger traffic. Park Station has played a symbolic and practical role in the city’s history.

It has seen royal visits (including the British Royal Family’s arrival in 1947) and underwent further redevelopment in the 1950s when platforms were lowered to build passenger concourses above.  In the 1990s, under Nelson Mandela’s vision, part of the station was reinvented as “Park City,” integrating commuter rail, retail space, and no longer segregated entrances — reflecting a new, more unified Johannesburg. From a transport perspective, Park Station is more than just a rail terminal. It’s a key interchange — connecting long-distance trains, local commuter lines, and Gautrain services.  The Gautrain’s central Johannesburg station opened there in June 2012. This connection enables fast, modern rapid transit from Park to other major nodes in Gauteng.
