Parco Monte Stella

A triumphant artificial hill where postwar rubble rises into Milan’s verdant urban summit. Parco di Monte Stella, affectionately known as the Montagnetta di San Siro, is a triumphant artificial hill and surrounding city park created from WWII bombing rubble, offering panoramic 360° views of Milan from its 149-meter summit. Located in the QT8/San Siro district in northwestern Milan, this sophisticated green space provides a soul-stirring blend of nature, history, and recreation—serving as an invigorating outdoor escape with trails, sports facilities, and serene vistas amid the vibrant energy of the 2026 Winter Games in Milano Cortina.

The park spans about 311,000 square meters with a network of paths, including a popular running loop (around 2.5–3 km), mountain bike trails, fitness stations, two playground areas, a bowling green, football/athletics field, and benches for relaxation. It’s fully public and free, with multiple entrances for easy access via QT8 metro station (M1 red line) or nearby trams/buses from central Milan.

As a symbol of postwar resilience and urban regeneration, Monte Stella embodies Milan’s innovative spirit in transforming destruction into beauty, attracting joggers, families, cyclists, and locals for outdoor activities. It reflects the “Made in Italy” legacy of community-driven green spaces that foster health, leisure, and appreciation of the city’s skyline from a unique elevated perspective.

The narrative is one of triumphant rebirth, designed in the 1960s by architect Piero Bottoni using debris from wartime bombings to create an artificial mound topped with soil and planted for greenery. It has evolved into a beloved local landmark, preserving its hilltop views and serving as a testament to Milan’s recovery and commitment to sustainable urban planning.

For visitors, Parco Monte Stella delivers an exhilarating climb (or gentle walk) to the summit for breathtaking panoramas of the Alps on clear days, the cityscape, and San Siro Stadium below, with rewarding trails for hiking, running, or picnics. It offers a design-forward, high-end experience of urban nature and history—ideal for active outings, sunset views, or a peaceful contrast to Milan’s intensity during a 2026 visit.
