Palacio Anchieta, Vitoria, State of Espirito Santo, Brazil

Until 1759, the Anchieta Palace housed the College of St. James, a group that began to be erected in 1570, from the construction of a new headquarters for the Church of the same name, which had set a fire.

The first wing of the college was completed in 1587, by Father José de Anchieta, who died ten years later being buried next to the main altar of the Church of St. James.

The second wing of the college was only built 120 years later, facing Victoria Bay, and is part of the quadrilateral that was just erected in 1747 and exists to this day.

In 1798, recovered from a fire occurred two years before, the building is denominated Palace of the Government.

In 1945, on the anniversary of the death of Father José de Anchieta, the then governor, Jones dos Santos Neves, published a decree naming the seat of the State Government as Palácio Anchieta – which has kept the symbolic tomb of the priest since 1922.

Facing three large fires And various reconstructions throughout its history, The building is Tombado by the State Council of Culture in 1983 and in 2004 the first work of restoration is initiated.

Two years later, with the first stage completed, the Anchieta Palace will only house the sectors connected to the Governor’s Office.

The complete restoration of Palácio Anchieta was completed in 2009, when the State Government gave the population more than a patrimony, an important part of its history and its identity. One of the oldest government headquarters in the country,
