Orla De Itacoatiara

The name ” Itacoatiara ” means in the indigenous language, where it comes from, ” painted stone “.This denomination was given to the place as a consequence of the existence there of inscriptions engraved in some stones, in the river, in front of the present city.

At the mouth of the Muturá River , a tributary of the Madeira River was founded by Ferreira João Sampaio, in the middle of the eighteenth century, the first nucleus of settlement organized in the territory of the current municipality of Itacoatiara. However, the terrible Muras Indians did not allow the development of the newly founded village, attacking it several times and forcing the withdrawal of its inhabitants to the Canumã River, where they settled. Even more so, the fierce Muras, soon after, forced them to retreat, this time to the river Abacaxis.
