Official Residence of the Prime Minister of Canada

The Official Residence of the Prime Minister of Canada, known as 24 Sussex Drive, is a historic and iconic property located in Ottawa, Ontario. This grand home serves as the official residence for Canada’s head of government, providing a place for the Prime Minister to live and host dignitaries and official events. Overlooking the Ottawa River, it is situated near Rideau Hall, the official residence of the Governor General of Canada, reflecting its proximity to the nation’s seat of power.

Built in 1868, the residence showcases an elegant mix of Gothic Revival and other 19th-century architectural styles. It features spacious interiors with formal reception areas, private living quarters, and beautifully landscaped gardens that provide a tranquil environment for both official and personal use. The home is equipped with various amenities to support the Prime Minister’s functions, including meeting spaces and security enhancements.

Despite its prestige, 24 Sussex has faced criticism over the years for its aging infrastructure, leading to debates about renovations and its long-term viability. Currently, significant repairs are needed to modernize the property, and as a result, recent Prime Ministers have opted not to reside there. Instead, they have used alternative accommodations, such as Rideau Cottage on the grounds of Rideau Hall.

24 Sussex remains a symbol of Canada’s political heritage, offering a glimpse into the life and responsibilities of the nation’s Prime Minister while also serving as a site of historical and cultural significance.
