Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, Russia
The date of foundation of the museum is considered to be 1896, although its first exposition was deployed a year earlier (January 3, 1895) in the Petrovsky House on Pochaina.
The preparation of the All-Russian Industrial and Art Exhibition in 1896 in Nizhny Novgorod and the celebrations associated with this significant event made adjustments to the fate of the local museum: he moved to the specially restored Dmitrievskaya tower of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin and began to be called artistic and historical.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the museum changed several addresses, and from 1924 received its permanent registration in the mansion of the former manor of merchant SM. Rukavishnikov on the Upper Volga Embankment. More than 100 years have passed since, thanks to the work and efforts of the Nizhny Novgorod public, the city museum was founded. Since 1958 It has the status of the Nizhny Novgorod State Historical and Architectural Museum – Reserve and enters the 21st century as one of the leading cultural institutions of the Nizhny Novgorod region.
Its purpose is to preserve, restore, study and publicly represent historical, architectural and natural complexes, material and spiritual values in their historical and cultural environment.
Today these are seven museums – branches, united in an original collection of historical and architectural monuments representing the basis of the old building of the central part of Nizhny Novgorod and organically combined with the natural landscape in the water area of the confluence of two great rivers – the Volga and the Oka.
