The Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community

The Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community sponsors German high-performance sport, thereby expressing that sport is a priority for the Federal Government. The presence and performance of German top athletes are important in shaping Germany’s image in the rest of the world. They also motivate people of all ages, with and without disabilities, to follow their example. So they help make sure that sport exerts social and integrative influence. Promoting sport for all is a responsibility met primarily by state and local governments.

The Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community and its executive agencies cover a broad range of tasks and activities, extending from civil protection, integration and sport funding to security. The many fields of activity make clear that domestic policy touches on all areas of society.

The Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community has a differentiated structure. It has offices in Berlin and Bonn and oversees a variety of executive agencies. Berlin has been its primary location since 12 July 1999. In late April 2015, ministry staff in Berlin moved into a new building in the heart of the government quarter and near the Federal Chancellery. With about 40,000 square meters and 1,150 offices, the new building has space for about 1,300 staff. Another 200 staff members work at the ministry’s offices in Bonn, at the Federal Academy of Public Administration (BAköV) in Brühl, and at the Permanent Representation of the Federal Republic of Germany to the European Union in Brussels. An additional 60,000 staff work for the agencies within the ministry’s remit, including roughly 40,000 in the Federal Police.
