Nan-fang-ao Fishing Harbor, Taiwán

The Nan Fang Ao Fishing Harbor is located in the Su-ao Harbor of Su-ao, Yilan County. It is one of Taiwan’s three major fishing ports and an important base for far seas fishery on the eastern coast. With hills on three sides of the port, it is naturally sheltered yet is in close proximity to fishing grounds, making Nan Fang Ao Fishing Harbor one of the best natural harbors. The harbor, known as the “Home of Mackerel”, accounts for 90% of the mackerel production on the island.

There are three fishing ports within the harbor. The first port, and the oldest of the three, was built during the era of Japanese occupation. There are many local specialty and seafood restaurants where people can enjoy the delicacy of fresh seafood. The second port is commonly known as “Nei Pi Fishing Port”and is the smallest of the three. From 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. daily, fishmongers from all over sell their fish in the market there. The third port, the Su-Ao Fishing Harbor and the deepest of the three ports was formerly the Su-Ao commercial port. Currently, it offers docking for large seiners, trawlers, and far seas fishing boats. Along the dock, the fish is auctioned on the vessels and offloaded to trucks and weighed on scale platform, a rather unusual way of fish auctioning.
