Museum Kunstpalast

Large art museum for modern & fine art masterpieces, including works by Rubens & decorative arts. As the city’s art museum, the Kunstpalast can look back on a diverse tradition of more than 300 years. As early as the middle of the 19th century, the association for the establishment of a picture gallery was founded in Düsseldorf. Its members – citizens, entrepreneurs and artists – declare a municipal gallery to be “the real issue of life in Düsseldorf”. The success of the initiative can be seen 50 years later: in 1913 the art museum becomes a reality. The first director, Karl Koetschau, aims to bring art closer to as many Düsseldorfers as possible. Due to its history, the Kunstpalast sees itself as a civic museum that appeals to all people in its city and welcomes them.

Düsseldorf’s lively art scene lives from the art academy. The foundation of the art palace goes back to the successful cooperation between the academy and the art-interested citizens of the city. The academy’s collection has been housed in the main courtyard since 1932. The holdings consist of the graphic collection and parts of Elector Jan Wellem’s picture gallery, founded in 1710. In addition to the art academy, the museum association and the artists’ association are involved in organizing art exhibitions when the Museum Kunstpalast foundation is set up together with E.ON AG in 1998. The aim of the foundation institution: to bring together the art museum, the art palace and the Robert Schumann Hall into one unit. At the end of 2017, E.ON ceased its permanent financial commitment and left the committees.
