Museu de Folclore Edison Carneiro is a museum dedicated to preserving and showcasing Brazilian popular culture. Founded in 1968, it forms part of the Centro Nacional de Folclore e Cultura Popular (CNFCP), a federal institution under the Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (IPHAN).The permanent exhibition, titled “Os Objetos e suas Narrativas” (“The Objects and Their Stories”), features over 17,000 items crafted from materials such as clay, wood, paper, rubber, metal, and scrap. Additional temporary exhibitions are held in the Galeria Mestre Vitalino, further enriching the museum’s exploration of folk traditions. The museum also maintains extensive technical reserves for preservation and researcher access, organized by material type across three storage areas totaling approximately 490 m²: pottery & metal, textiles & paper, and wood & fibers. The museum was established from the Campaign for the Defense of Brazilian Folklore, initially situated within the Palácio do Catete. Over the years, it expanded to include adjacent buildings, including numbers 179 and 181 on Rua do Catete.
