Museo Archeologico – Sezione Egizia

The **Sezione Egizia** of Milan’s Museo Archeologico, housed within the historic Castello Sforzesco, offers visitors a captivating glimpse into the world of ancient Egypt. This collection showcases around 250 carefully selected artifacts from a larger holding of thousands, highlighting key elements of Egyptian society through iconic figures such as pharaohs, scribes, and artisans. Everyday objects blend with ritual and funerary items, creating a clear picture of daily life, beliefs, and artistic traditions along the Nile.

Among the highlights are mummiform statuettes known as ushabty, protective amulets, representations of anthropomorphic and zoomorphic deities, painted sarcophagi of different periods, and even preserved mummies. These pieces illustrate the Egyptians’ profound focus on the afterlife, magic, and divine protection. The display emphasizes both the beauty of the craftsmanship and the cultural significance behind each object, drawing visitors into the spiritual and material richness of this enduring civilization.

A special part of the section comes from the 1930s excavations led by papyrologist Achille Vogliano in the Fayum region, particularly at Tebtynis and the sacred site of Medînet Mâdi, where he uncovered an important temple. Standout finds include the impressive statue of Pharaoh Amenemhat III from the 19th century BC, founder of that very temple. This material adds valuable archaeological context, making the collection not only beautiful but also a meaningful record of one of history’s most fascinating cultures.
