Monument tourist, Hanseatic fountain, Veliky Novgorod, Novgorod Oblast, Russia

On the trading side, a tourist girl sat down on the pedestrian bridge right on the granite parapet. She leaned her hands against the warm granite, leaned back, exposing her face to the June sun. Yes, and stayed there – a lively and light summer impression, cast in bronze.

Monument to the touristVeliky Novgorod loves to surprise its guests with small non-standard sculptures – it’s a wooden bear, home-collapsed on a bench on the Alexander Nevsky quay, and a sculpture of a boy painter, and much more. But, perhaps, the most famous among them was a monument to a tourist girl. This happened largely thanks to Dmitry Anatolyevich Medvedev – a few years ago, after visiting our city, he was photographed next to the bronze young lady, providing her with a good PR. Now many residents and guests of Novgorod want to capture themselves next to a miniature bronze tourist and toss a couple of coins into her slippered shoe – for luck.

An unusual monument appeared on the bank of the Volkhov in 2009 with the light hand of the sculptor Vadim Borovy and the publisher-patron Nikolai Sumarokov. A graceful statue of a tourist (according to another version – Novgorod) became a gift to the 1150th anniversary of our city and perfectly blended into the urban landscape – as if for many years a bronze girl is sitting by the Brokeback Bridge, gazing upwards carelessly. This small monument, devoid of solemnity and pathos, became a small bright stroke to the portrait of our ancient city – and perhaps it is these strokes that are remembered the most.
