Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales

The Monastery of the Descalzas Reales, in the heart of Madrid, is a space of worship and tranquility where visitors can observe the contrast with the bustle of the capital. It was the will of its foundress, Joanna of Austria (1535-1573), youngest daughter of Emperor Charles V and Princess of Portugal, to convert the palace in which she herself was born, and which belonged to her father’s treasurer, into a monastery of Poor Clare nuns. In it he installed his chambers after his return from Portugal, and in the chapel that occupies the same space in which he came into the world rests his body. A unique space to evoke the Spanish Austrias of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries
