Mkhtar Gosh Mausoleum, Gosh, Armenia 

West and uphill from St. Gevorg is Mkhitar Gosh’s mausoleum built in his lifetime. The building had two stone crosses facing the entry, fragments of which survive. Numerous tombstones and khachkar fragments lay scattered around the structure. Somewhere nearby is the presumed site for the wooden Holy Spirit church, which Gosh also commissioned in his last years.

His contemporary Kirakos Gandzaketsi described Gosh’s final years and death. Because Mkhitar loved deserts and uninhabited places, he made his home distant from the monastery. There he built a small wooden church in the name of the Holy Spirit. In his old age he built a church as a mausoleum for himself above the monastery on the right. It was made with dressed stones and lime and named for the Resurrection of Christ…
