The birthday of the Military History Museum of Artillery, Engineers and Signal Corps is considered August 29, 1703, when on the territory of the Peter and Paul Fortress, at the personal order of Peter the Great, a special Zeichhaus was constructed to store old artillery pieces. At first it was a small wooden building, then a brick one. There were delivered for storage “for memory to eternal glory” domestic and captured artillery pieces of historical value.
The opening of Tseikhhaus was preceded by the collection in the entire Russian Empire of valuable exhibits – “memorable” and “curious” tools.
The meeting was first called “The Hall of Memorable Objects of the Main Artillery Directorate”, then – the Artillery Museum (AM), and since 1903 – the Artillery Historical Museum (AIM). During the Soviet era, the Artillery Historical Museum received the funds of the Central Historical Military Engineering Museum (1963). In 1965, the Military Museum of Communications entered the Artillery Historical Museum. Since then, the museum has become known as the Military History Museum of Artillery, Engineers and Signal Corps (VIMAVIViS).
At present, VIMAIViVS is one of the largest military and historical museums in the world, possessing extensive collections of artillery guns and ammunition, small arms and cold weapons, military engineering equipment, military communications, combat banners, military uniforms, works of battle painting and graphics, awards and signs, as well as archival documents testifying to the history of the development of the artillery of the Russian army, military exploits of the defenders of the Fatherland.

Among the exhibits are works of art reflecting the heroic past of Russia, portraits of emperors, grand dukes, illustrious generals, distinguished soldiers and officers.
