Mike Burgess is the Director-General of Security for the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), a position he assumed in September 2019. Burgess has a deep background in cyber security and intelligence. Before joining ASIO, he served as the Chief Information Security Officer at Telstra, one of Australia’s largest telecommunications companies. In this role, he was responsible for safeguarding the company’s network and information assets. Prior to that, Burgess was the Director-General of the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD), where he focused on cyber warfare, intelligence gathering, and national cyber defense strategies.

His expertise spans over 35 years, including work in both the private and public sectors. Burgess is recognized for his technical proficiency, leadership skills, and commitment to keeping Australia secure. He has been a vocal advocate for the importance of strong cyber defenses and has steered ASIO through a period of increasing global security threats.
