McCracken’s Rest, Te Waewae 9881, Southland Region, New Zealand

One of the most renowned scenic rest areas/lookouts on the Southern Scenic Route offers travellers an opportunity to rest and sample the fresh, clean air of Te Waewae Bay. The area was named after the landowners, Robert and David McCracken.

The area includes parking space, a viewing platform, and picnic tables.

The platform offers views of Sand Hill Point, the Hump Ridge, Solander Island (one million years old, formed by the eroded skeleton of a volcano), Pahia Point and Stewart Island. In good weather the area is favoured by recreational fishers and gemstones can be found along the beach.
