City Hall Dusseldorf
Mayor Stephan Keller is currently leading Düsseldorf, Germany’s seventh-largest city. Düsseldorf is traditionally known for its fashion and trade fairs and very high standard of living. Mayor of Düsseldorf was born in the German city of Aachen and developed an interest in politics at a very early age. After studying law at the University of Bayreuth, Keller earned his Master of Laws degree at the University of Birmingham, one of England’s largest one. He spent a significant amount of time at the German Association of Cities, an organization tasked with safeguarding the interests of the cities. Keller was the general manager’s office director between 2000 to 2005. In 2006, he joined the North Rhine-Westphalia Association of Towns and Municipalities in Düsseldorf as a deputy for urban planning, the environment, and municipal services. Stephan Keller was elected mayor of the state capital Düsseldorf in a run-off election in September 2020. Thanks to his vast political experience, Keller has demonstrated great ability to tackle some of the most important issues this dynamic German city is faced with. The topics of transport, safety, sustainability, family and digitization are some of mayor Keller’s priorities. Mayor of Düsseldorf states on his website that both climate and sustainability are two topics especially close to his heart. It is therefore not a surprise that Düsseldorf has recently been adopting some very important green policies which aim to make the city more climate-friendly. The greening of roofs, facades, and inner courtyards, as well as urban gardening projects, regularly take place in this German city. Achieving a climate-friendly Düsseldorf through strong public transportation, well-developed cycle paths, more Park & Ride spaces, intelligent traffic control, and the promotion of climate-friendly drive technologies remains one of mayor Keller’s main goals. The potential of cycling for sustainable mobility in cities is enormous, which is why Düsseldorf has also taken steps to increase its popularity. It was announced in December 2021 that the plans to add junction signposts to its biking routes in order to make the city more appealing for cycling tourism and confirm its reputation as one of the most bike-friendly cities in Germany. Mayor of Düsseldorf is also committed to making the city greener, cleaner and safer. He continues to take significant steps toward reshaping Düsseldorf into a modern green metropolis where residents can enjoy a high standard of living. Thanks to outstanding work that is being done by mayor Keller, the future seems bright for Düsseldorf.
