Born on March 28, 1961, in Bilbao, Juan Mari Aburto has dedicated his life to public service and the betterment of his hometown. After earning a law degree from the University of Deusto in 1984, he began his career as a civil servant with the Provincial Council of Biscay in 1986. His commitment to social justice led him to hold various significant positions, including Director General of Legal Regime and Public Function, Deputy for Social Action, and Deputy for the Presidency in the Provincial Council of Biscay. In 2012, he was appointed Minister of Employment and Social Policies in the Basque Government, focusing on employment promotion and social welfare.
In 2015, Aburto was elected Mayor of Bilbao, a role he has embraced with dedication and passion. Under his leadership, the city has pursued ambitious initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
