Mausoleum of Galla Placidia

A UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its vibrant mosaics adorning the small but awe-inspiring interior. The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia is a 5th-century Christian chapel located in Ravenna, Italy. Renowned for its exceptionally well-preserved mosaics, it offers a glimpse into early Christian art and architecture.

Traditionally believed to be the burial site of Empress Galla Placidia, recent research suggests she was likely interred elsewhere. The mausoleum was constructed between 425 and 450 AD and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site encompassing Ravenna’s early Christian monuments. Architectural Features a Greek cross design with a central nave and intersecting arms, the mausoleum’s unassuming brick exterior contrasts with its opulent interior. The central dome is adorned with a golden cross set against a starry sky, creating a celestial ambiance. The walls are embellished with intricate mosaics depicting biblical scenes and symbolic motifs.

Located near the Basilica of San Vitale, the mausoleum is open to visitors. To preserve its delicate environment, visits are limited to 10 minutes. A combined ticket is available, granting access to multiple sites, including the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, Basilica of San Vitale, and Neonian Baptistery. This ticket is valid for seven consecutive days.
