
Matthew R. Galeotti serves as the Acting Assistant Attorney General of the Criminal Division. In this capacity, Mr. Galeotti supervises the Division’s more than 1,100 federal prosecutors and staff members who conduct investigations and prosecutions involving violent crime, sex trafficking, cartels and transnational criminal organizations, human smuggling and trafficking offenses, cybercrime, fraud, corruption, money laundering, child exploitation and other crimes, as well as matters involving international affairs and sensitive law enforcement techniques.
Mr. Galeotti joined the Criminal Division in March 2025 as the Head of the Criminal Division. Previously, he served as an Associate Deputy Attorney General in the Office of the Deputy Attorney General. Prior to that, Mr. Galeotti served as Acting Deputy Chief of the Business and Securities Fraud Section in the United States Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of New York (EDNY), where he investigated and prosecuted securities and other complex fraud, abuses of financial and digital asset markets, and money laundering. As a line Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) in the Organized Crime and Gangs Section, Mr. Galeotti prosecuted cases involving murder, organized crime and racketeering offenses, sex trafficking, narcotics trafficking and cybercrime. In recognition for his work as an AUSA, Mr. Galeotti was the recipient of the Assistant Attorney General’s Award for Exceptional Service and also received the United States Attorney’s Award for Superior Performance.
Prior to his time with the Department, Mr. Galeotti was an associate and counsel at the New York City Office of an international law firm, where he focused on investigations and criminal litigation. Mr. Galeotti clerked for a United States District Judge in the Eastern District of New York. He is a graduate of Columbia Law School and Villanova University.
