Matagarup Bridge

Matagarup Bridge 370m is a suspension pedestrian bridge crossing over the Swan River in Perth, Western Australia. Situated approximately half-way between Heirisson Island and the Goongoongup Bridge, it provides pedestrian access between Burswood and East Perth. The Matagarup Bridge is a striking suspension pedestrian and cycle bridge that spans the Swan River in Perth, Western Australia. Stretching approximately 370 metres across the water, it connects the Burswood Peninsula, home to Optus Stadium, with East Perth and provides convenient access to the city centre, public transport, and parking facilities. Opened in 2018, the bridge serves as a vital link for thousands of visitors, especially during major events at the stadium, helping to ease congestion and offer a scenic route away from busy roads.

Its innovative design features graceful, sweeping arches that rise to a height of around 72 metres at the central point, with a main cable-stayed span of 160 metres. The flowing form draws inspiration from local symbolism, evoking images of black and white swans or the Wagyl, a rainbow serpent from Noongar Aboriginal Dreaming stories. This cultural significance is reflected in its name, “Matagarup,” which comes from the traditional Noongar language referring to a shallow crossing point in the river near Heirisson Island.

Beyond its practical function, the Matagarup Bridge stands as an iconic architectural landmark in Perth’s landscape. During the day, its dramatic steel structure creates impressive views of the river, city skyline, and stadium precinct. At night, the bridge comes alive with dynamic LED lighting displays that change to celebrate sporting events, cultural occasions, and community milestones, making it a captivating feature for both locals and visitors crossing the Swan River.
