Within the Berkeley hotel sits Marcus Wareing’s flagship; a masculine place with burnished red leather banquettes, well-spaced tables and a contented atmosphere that makes it a hit with one and all. If you want to be at the centre of the action, book the chef’s table, otherwise you’ll find yourself peering enviously on through the opaque glass. The affable team cater for your every need and have great knowledge of the menu. Dishes read like an inventory of the British larder: Herdwick lamb, Cornish cod, Goosnargh duck, Galloway beef… supplemented by some Mediterranean ingredients like Sicilian red prawns. Flavours are bold and adventurous, sauces are a highlight, and the unctuous desserts are not to be missed. The ‘Taste of Marcus’ menu best demonstrates the kitchen’s skills and the well-chosen wine list highlights some lesser-represented regions.
